Between 20 and 40% of pregnant women will experience bleeding during the first trimester, with miscarriage being the most common complication of early pregnancy. Understandably, this is so distressing to women, and many will seek reassurance, but also treatment from their GP.

We know that progesterone is essential for the maintenance of pregnancy and progesterone deficiency is associated with miscarriage. The latest evidence from a recent high-quality randomised clinical trial showed that progesterone therapy improves outcomes for women with threatened miscarriage who have a history of miscarriage.

In this interview, we run through the latest developments on progesterone use in threatened miscarriage, as we GPs are so well placed to support women and provide the initial assessment and treatment.
